Engagement or Pre-Wedding Session – The Ultimate Guide :)

Engagement Session Photographer in Buenos Aires

On the (perhaps very long?) journey to your big wedding day, having an engagement session or pre-wedding shoot comes up as a unique opportunity to capture those “last photos as a couple” before the wedding.

Engagement or pre-wedding session in Buenos Aires

What is an engagement session?

A pre-wedding shoot is a bit more than just “taking beautiful photos”: they will be the last photos you have as a couple before the wedding! (Sounds heavy, doesn’t it?) But beyond this, pre-wedding photos serve several purposes:

Breaking the ice and getting a casual photo shoot

Yes, of course! On your wedding day, you will have us like paparazzi capturing everything that happens on the big day. That is why the pre-wedding photo shoot helps—among other things—to let you “break the ice” in front of the camera(s), and feel comfortable around us 🙂

Creating a bond and connection with the camera (and with the photographer!)

Besides getting you used to our presence for the wedding day, it is an excellent opportunity to get to know each other a bit more, and chat in a relaxed and laid-back setting. Since there’s no rush or strict timeline on the day of the shoot to limit the time you want to spend on the photos, it really helps us too. The better we get to know each couple we photograph, the better the energy and good vibes flow on the wedding day 🙂

In a previous article dedicated to “how to choose your ideal wedding photographer“, we talked quite a bit about this topic.

Is it better to do a session before or after the wedding?

Of course, both are great options! They just yield very different material. In the session BEFORE the wedding, as we mentioned above, we aim more for capturing memories that will stand as your “last” photos as an unmarried couple, getting you used to being in front of the camera, etc.

On the other hand, when we do a post-wedding session, everything has already happened! So these shoots tend to be much more relaxed and laid-back. In fact, since you won’t be wearing your wedding attire again, some couples choose this opportunity to do a TRASH THE DRESS session. There is a lot of information about that at that link.

What is the best outfit for a pre-wedding shoot?

On this point, it will depend a lot on the “level of production” you want to bring to the session. In some cases, couples prefer to use the occasion to put together something more stylized, sometimes even including several outfit changes. Honestly, it isn’t strictly necessary, but it’s always up to each couple.

It’s also a great idea to think about how your clothing coordinates as a couple, aiming for a nice “harmony” or complements between your outfits. Visually, this adds an extra layer of depth to the visual narrative.

In our opinion, the most important thing is that you feel comfortable in the clothes you choose, so that outfits don’t become a distraction and you can pose relaxed, making the most of the session.

How to pose in a couple’s session?

Oof, we could write a whole book on this! In our case, we always try to prioritize a photography style that leans toward spontaneous and casual images, much like “wedding photojournalism“. Still, on the day of the shoot, there is obviously *some* posing involved, as there aren’t many interactions we can capture that happen entirely naturally without a tiny bit of direction.

In any case, the idea is to give you minor guidance on how to pose, and what usually happens is that the best photos are those that happen naturally in between poses.

Take note of this “PRO-TIP”: if you’re planning a pre-wedding shoot, Instagram probably already knows and will start showing you inspiration material (and if not, look for it!). A great idea is to start saving those photos you love or that inspire you, to use them as a reference on the day of the shoot. While it is practically impossible to replicate those photos exactly, they will at least serve as a spark for ideas to build your own story. Believe me, this REALLY works!

Ideas for an engagement session:

When it comes to the location, some people prefer in-studio shoots… but we always suggest that ideas for a couple’s session should come from things that represent you or make you feel comfortable.
That’s why, in general, the idea of using your own home (or any other place you feel comfortable in!) works really well, while also looking for an alternative outdoor location nearby—like a local park—to add variety to your photos.
And as for ideas, since that is sooooo personal, the best we can do is share some examples in the photos below to inspire you!

Including Your Furry Companion: Pets as the Stars of the Session

Couple photo session with pets

Do you have a pet / fur baby and want them to be part of your love story? Well, they are more than welcome!

Whether it’s taking a stroll through the Bosques de Palermo or Costanera Sur (or any other place you can think of or love!), engagement sessions allow your pets to be the stars of the story too. Capturing spontaneous moments with your furry friend will add a touch of joy (and sweetness!) to your photos.

We don’t even need to tell you how much we LOVE animals, right?

And what about the pre-wedding VIDEO?

But of course! Up until now, we’ve only been talking about the photo shoot, but you can certainly do a video before your wedding too. We tell you all about it in the following link:
